Tilt with Tigers Ends in Fifth Draw of Season for Athenas

LOS ANGELES, Calif. – Rhiann Holman (CMC) opened the scoring on Saturday night with a tally in the 11th minute off a pass from Sarah Tocher (CMC) against the Occidental Tigers. That 1-0 lead would stand until the Tigers leveled the score in the 34th minute. The remainder of regulation as well as two overtime periods would not produce another goal and the Athenas and Tigers finished the SCIAC tilt in a 1-1 draw.

The draw is the fifth of the season for the Athenas who move to 4-6-5 overall and 3-4-5 in the SCIAC.

Holman's goal was her team-leading fifth tally of the season and came off a corner kick from Tocher on just the second shot of the match for the Athenas. In the fifth minute, Holman tested the keeper with a strike on goal, but it was turned away. The Tigers mirrored the attempt by Holman with a shot against Claire Hamson (CMC) in the sixth minute, but the freshman keeper saved the shot for her first of eight saves on the night.

In the 24th minute, the Athenas made a bid to double their lead when shots from Catherine Leon (CMC) and Margaret Loncki (CMC) went on frame, but both were turned aside.

Ten minutes later, the Tigers took advantage of an opportunity and connected to tie the match. Occidental's Megan Maher hit the crossbar with an attempt, but Ashley Rodarte was there to clean up the rebound and put the Tigers on the board.

The score remained tied into the second-half, when both sides attempted to take the lead. In the first 20 minutes of the second-half the Tigers sent four shots on target, but Hamson turned all four away. In the 56th minute, the Athenas had a shot turned away when Loncki put an attempt on frame.

Hamson helped keep the Tigers from taking a lead late in the second-half with saves in the 76th, 82nd, and 90th minutes to push the 1-1 game into overtime.

CMS was in the driver's seat in the first overtime, taking two shots in the 10-minute period, while Whittier controlled the second overtime period with all three shots in the period. Neither team was able to connect for the golden goal and the match ended in a 1-1 draw.

The Athenas will have a quick turn around when they take on the Caltech Beavers on Sunday afternoon on the road at 1:00 p.m.
