Athenas Cruise To Three Wins Over Opening Weekend

CLAREMONT, Calif. – The No. 8 Claremont-Mudd Scripps women's tennis team began its 2013 spring season in impressive fashion over the weekend with wins over Brandeis University (9-0) on Friday, Feb. 22, along with Vanguard University (8-1) and Bates College (9-0) on Saturday, Feb. 23 at the Biszantz Family Tennis Center. CMS dominated doubles play winning each of its matchups over the three matches, the lone loss for CMS coming in a singles match to Vanguard.

No. 8 CMS 9, No. 22 Brandeis 0
In a match that featured a pair of top-25 teams, the Athenas won 9-0 on Friday. In all six of the singles matches, each match only went two sets. In the No. 1 singles match which featured the third ranked singles player in Division III in senior Kristin Lim against No. 17 Carley Cooke, Lim won 6-0, 6-2. The closest singles match of the day was between the No. 2 singles players in junior Abby Hayley and Faith Broderick. Hayley won 6-3, 6-4 against Broderick.

The No. 1 doubles and No. 3 doubles matches were also close. Lim and Hayley defeated Cooke and Broderick 8-6 in No. 1 doubles while freshman Yvonne Likomanova and sophomore Sarah Kukino also won 8-6 in No. 3 singles.

No. 8 CMS 8, Vanguard 1
CMS won five of its six singles matches, all in two sets, with the lone loss coming in the No. 4 singles match. Junior Chloe Dobbert shut out her opponent Ana Taranto 6-0, 6-0 in the No.6 singles match.

The No.1 doubles team of junior Crystal Lim and freshman Caroline Ward also won in convincing fashion, 8-0.

No. 8 CMS 9, No. 28 Bates 0
The Athenas closed out the opening weekend with a win against another ranked opponent, this time Bates College. Kristin Lim defeated No. 29 Elena Mandzhukova 6-0, 6-1 in the No. 1 singles match. Kukino also had an impressive singles win, 6-0, 6-0 in the No. 5 singles match over Nicole Russell.

In doubles play, CMS won two of its three matches with shutouts. Both the No. 2 and No. 3 doubles teams defeated Bates 8-0.

Next up on the schedule for CMS is a home match against Point Loma Nazarene University on Friday, March 1, at 2:30 p.m.
