Close Win Over Cal State L.A. Gives Athenas 3-0 Weekend

CLAREMONT, Calif. – A narrow 5-4 win over Cal State L.A. at home on Saturday highlighted a 3-0 weekend for the Claremont-Mudd-Scripps women's tennis team and preserved the team's perfect record on the season. The Athenas also earned conference wins, 8-1 at Chapman on Friday and a 9-0 victory over Whittier at home on Saturday. CMS is now 23-0 overall and in first place in SCIAC at 7-0.

CMS 8, @ Chapman 1 (Friday)
The Athenas took all six singles matches and two of three doubles matches against Chapman to get the win. Junior Abby Hayley, freshman Caroline Ward, sophomore Sarah Kukino, junior Chloe Dobbert, freshman Yvonne Likomanova and junior Victoria Nichols each earned wins in singles play.

Chapman's lone point came in No. 2 doubles as Sophia Duong and Genna Ford defeated junior Victoria Santoro and Likomanova 8-2. Dobbert and Kukino got the win in No. 1 doubles 8-5 while Nichols and junior Sheena Patel got the win 8-4 in the third position.

CMS 9, Whittier 0 (Saturday)
Senior Kristin Lim who is ranked third in singles in Division III along with Hayley, Ward, Likomanova, junior Erin Coughlan and Nichols all got wins in singles for CMS. Nichols in No. 6 singles had the closest win as she defeated Lauren Gelgur 7-6 (2), 6-2.

Kristin Lim and Hayley pulled out an 8-6 win in No. 1 doubles over Megan Zamilpa and Liliana Serylo while the other two CMS doubles teams topped Whittier 8-1.

CMS 5, Cal State L.A. 4 (Saturday)
For just the second time this season, CMS won 5-4 as 21 of the 23 victories this season have been by a 6-3 margin or more. CMS also defeated Williams 5-4 in March.

In this match, doubles proved to the difference as CMS took two of three points. After Kristin Lim and Hayley lost in No. 1 doubles, junior Crystal Lim and Ward along with Dobbert and Kukino pulled out wins 8-4 and 8-2 in No. 2 and No. 3 doubles, respectively.

In singles, Cal State L.A. took two of the first three singles matches although Ward did get a three-set 6-1, 4-6, 6-4 win in No. 2 singles.

Next up for CMS are home matches against La Verne and Washington & Lee at 2 and 6 p.m. on Friday, April 19.
