Hawaii trip for Athena tennis starts with win over D-II Chaminade

WAIPIO, Hawaii – The No. 4 Claremont-Mudd-Scripps women's tennis team kicked its season off with a convincing 8-1 win over NCAA Division II foe Chaminade University on Wednesday afternoon at Central Oahu Regional Park. The match vs. Chaminade is the first of four matches in Hawaii during the week for the Athenas.

CMS took four of five singles matches including wins in the top two positions, two doubles matches and also won two points as a result of default by Chaminade in No. 3 doubles and No. 6 singles.

Sophomore Caroline Ward defeated Melanie Schumilas 6-1, 6-1 in No. 1 singles while freshman Katie Kuosman earned a 6-1, 6-1 in the No. 2 spot. Chaminade's lone point came in No. 3 singles as Jan Matsumoto defeated senior Victoria Nichols 7-6, 6-2.

Next up for CMS is a match Friday vs. BYU-Hawaii at 2 p.m.
