Athenas sweep pair of weekend SCIAC matches

CLAREMONT, Calif. – Back in SCIAC action for the first time in a couple of weeks, the No. 5 Claremont-Mudd-Scripps women's tennis team earned a pair of conference wins over the weekend, winning 9-0 over Chapman and Redlands at the Biszantz Family Tennis Center. CMS is now 11-6 overall and tied atop the SCIAC at 4-0.

CMS 9, Chapman 0 (March 28)
CMS earned a pair of 8-4 wins in No. 1 and No. 2 doubles but doubles play was highlighted by the 8-0 win for senior Crystal Lim and sophomore Yvonne Likomanova in No. 3 doubles over Chapman's Madeline Saunders and Anna Nelson. Sophomore Caroline Ward and freshman Katie Kuosman won 8-4 in No. doubles over Rachel Fox and Sophia Duong while senior Chloe Dobbert and junior Sarah Kukino won by the same score in No. 3 doubles.

The closest match of singles play came in No. 2 singles as Dobbert defeated Duong in a tiebreaker, 6-3, 4-6, 11-9. Each of the other five matches were won by CMS in two sets as Ward (No. 1), Kuosman (No. 3), Kukino (No. 4), Lim (No. 5) and Likomanova (No. 6) all got wins.


CMS 9, Redlands 0 (March 29)
On Saturday, CMS also pulled out a 9-0 victory but it proved to be tougher as two of the singles matches were won in three sets. Kuosman defeated Natalie Etchegaray 6-1, 3-6, 6-2 in No. 3 singles and Likomanova defeated Emily Murnin 6-2, 3-6, 7-5 in No. 6 singles. Other singles wins went to Ward (No. 1), Dobbert (No. 2), Kukino (No. 4) and Lim (No. 5).

In No. 1 doubles, Ward and Kuosman defeated Caera Sumida and Jessica Ly 8-2 while Dobbert and Kukino also earned an 8-2 win in No. 2 doubles and Lim and Likomanova won 8-4 in No. 3 doubles.


On Wednesday, April 2, the Athenas host No. 2 Williams at 4 p.m. at the Biszantz Family Tennis Center.
