CLAREMONT, Calif. – In the weekend's ITA West Regional presented by Oracle, the Claremont-Mudd-Scripps women's tennis team advanced two individuals and two doubles teams into the semifinals in the respective draws. Freshman Catherine Allen (SC) won four matches including beating two teammates en route to the singles finals.
As the No. 7 seed, Allen received a bye in the first round and then matched up with classmate Nicole Tan (CMC) in the round of 16. After the 2-set victory (6-1, 6-2), Allen advanced to face senior Katie Kuosman (CMC) who had beaten Emily Kuo from Pomona-Pitzer in three sets (6-3, 6-7(0), 6-3). The rookie bested the No. 2 seed Kuosman and then Grace Hruska from Pomona-Pitzer to get into the final against another Sagehen: Caroline Casper.
The only set the No. 1 seed, Casper, lost in the singles draw was to CMS junior Kyla Scott (HMC). Scott even had two match points against the eventual champion. Prior to the semifinals, Scott won two consecutive matches before lining up opposite teammate Lindsay Brown (CMC) in the quarterfinals. The seeding of Scott at No. 4 and Brown at No. 5 held true as Scott won 6-3, 6-2.
In the round of 32, freshman Anastasia Bryan-Ajania (SC) defeated last year's singles champion Joy Kim from Pomona-Pitzer. She then matched up with CMS sophomore Jessie Cruz (CMC). The Athenas split the first two sets and then Bryan-Ajania ran out of steam as Cruz took the third set 6-0.
In the doubles draw, the No. 1 seed from CMS of Scott and Kuosman ran into singles champion Casper and her partner Arianna Chen in the semifinals. Fourth ranked Brown and Tan also made it to the semis but fell 8-6 to the doubles champions Kim and Hruska from PP.
This concludes the non-traditional season for the Athenas, who will pick back up in February 2017.
