CLAREMONT, Calif. – The No. 3 Claremont-Mudd-Scripps women's tennis team opened the 2018 home slate with a pair of victories on Saturday. First the Athenas defeated No. 40 Caltech with a convincing 9-0 victory. In the nightcap of their double-dip, CMS took down Division II No. 9 UC San Diego 6-3 to move their overall record to 3-0 on the young season.
CMS defeats Caltech 9-0
The Athenas built strong leads in all three doubles matches and swept the Beavers in doubles play to take a 3-0 lead heading into singles. Just as they did in doubles, CMS swept through the Beavers in singles play to earn the 9-0 victory and start SCIAC play with a win.
Both won in straight sets with Berger earning a 7-6, 7-5 victory in the #1 singles match and Cox dropping only one game, 6-1, 6-0 in the #6 singles match.
Jessie Cruz (CMC) and Juliette Martin (HMC) also claimed their wins in straight sets. Cruz dropped just three games while defeating her opponent in the #3 singles match 6-3, 6-0. Martin won her match by nearly an identical score, taking a 6-3, 6-1 victory at #5 singles.
Lauren Yamagami (CMC) battled her way to her #4 singles match victory, taking her opponent to three sets before winning 2-6, 7-6, 12-2. In #2 singles Madison Shea (CMC) won the first set 6-2 before her opponent retired in the second set.

CMS defeats UC San Diego 6-3
In their second match of the day, CMS squared off with their second Division II opponent in as many days. After topping Azusa Pacific on Friday, the Athenas squared off with No. 9 UC San Diego on Saturday. The Tritons won the top singles and double matches, but CMS went 6-1 in the other seven contests to secure their third-straight victory to begin the season.
Lindsay Brown (CMC), Cox and Anastasia Bryan-Ajania (SC) all won important singles matches in straight sets. Brown swept her #4 match 6-2, 6-2, Cox took the #5 match 7-5, 6-3 and Bryan-Ajania's #6 match finished with a score of 6-2, 6-2.
The #2 singles match went to three sets and Allen pulled through a 6-3, 4-6, 6-3 victory.
After topping the Tritons for the first time in over a decade, the Athenas take a short break from competition before returning to the courts on Feb. 16. CMS will take on San Diego Christian at 1:00 p.m. and Colorado College in the nightcap at 6 p.m. at home.
