CLAREMONT, Calif. – The USTFCCCA announced their Regional Awards on Wednesday at the banquet prior to the NCAA DIII Track and Field National Championship. Emily Bassett (CMC) was named the West Region Field Athlete of the Year after a stellar year in the throwing events, highlighted by a masterpiece in the hammer throw (62.04m, 203'6") at the Long Beach Invitational on Apr. 20. Head coach Glenn Stewart was named West Region Coach of the Year.
Bassett is the lone Athena in the field events at the 2018 NCAA DIII Track and Field National Championship, and looks to continue to shine in the throws. After completing the third farthest hammer throw in Division III history, as well as shattering both the CMS and SCIAC record at 62.04 m (203'6"), the senior has the top mark in the nation this season. She also qualified in the discus after hitting a distance of 45.22m (148'4") at the Redlands Final Qualifier, the second-best performance in the event in CMS history. She was named SCIAC Field Athlete of the Year.
Stewart, in his fifth year at Claremont-Mudd-Scripps, led the Athenas to their fourth-straight SCIAC Championship, with individual victories in ten events. The Athenas have seven women competing in seven events at the NCAA DIII Track & Field Championships.
Bassett will compete in the discus throw on Thursday at 11:30 a.m. and in the hammer throw on Saturday at noon.
