Athenas Pull Out Five Set Win Over Poets

The CMS Athenas moved to .500 overall (7-7, 2-2) after a win in five sets over the Whittier Poets this past Tuesday.  CMS won 19-25, 25-17, 25-23, 20-25, 15-12 and dropped the Poets to 3-10 overall and 1-2 in SCIAC.

The Athenas lost the first set 25-19 despite jumping out to a quick lead as Whittier outhit CMS 13-6 in the set. In the second set, CMS jumped out to another early lead and was able to maintain it to take the set 25-17.  The third set was the closest set of the match and was won by CMS 25-23.  Small mistakes and miscommunications plagued the Athenas in the fourth set and the Poets were able to capitalize taking the set 25-20.

The Athenas fell behind once again in the fifth set, but the intermission caused by switching sides provided a much-needed pause.  Upon resuming play, the outside hitters stepped up the take the set 15-12.  Freshman Monique Nguyen (pictured) had three of her five blocks near the end to put CMS up 13-11.  Lone Senior Emily Hudson then had one of her team-high 13 kills to put the team within a point of victory.  Sophomore Bennett Jones closed out the match with one of her four blocks to get the win.

Other notable performances include 39 assists by setter Taylor Jones, 27 digs by freshman Libero Megan Coleman and nine kills each by Nguyen, B. Jones and Megan Richman.

CMS will be play at Whittier on October 25, but will look immediately to hosting Redlands this Friday, September 30 at 7:30.
