CLAREMONT, Calif. – The No. 18 Claremont-Mudd-Scripps volleyball team secured a second place SCIAC finish with Saturday night's 3-0 win over Chapman on Senior Night (25-17, 25-20, 25-13). Megan Coleman and Regina Mullen were honored as the team's graduating seniors. This is the highest regular season finish for the Athenas during head coach Kurt Vlasich's four seasons at the helm, and the most conference wins in program history (14).
In the first set, freshman Margaux Arntson and sophomore Nicole Kerkhof led CMS with five kills each. Freshman Clara Madsen kept the Athenas in a few rallies with a team-high eight digs. CMS began to take control of the set when they won four points in a row on junior Arianna Sifuentes' serve to take the 9-6 lead. On Sifuente's next serve, the Athenas went on another four point run to have the 21-13 advantage.
Junior Audrey Breitwieser stepped up in the second set with five kills and a big time solo block. Breitwieser finished the match with 12 kills.
The Athenas increased their hitting percenktage with each set and only had one attack error in the third set. CMS won the first five points of the third set on Kerkhof's serve and three kills by Breitwieser. During an impressive lay out effort for a dig, Sifuentes knocked her eyebrow on the court and had to be substituted because of the bleeding.
CMS finished the match with a .267 hitting percentage, significantly higher than the .145 percentage when the Athenas played at Chapman earlier in the season.
The No. 18 CMS team looks forward to postseason play starting with the SCIAC Tournament hosted by top seeded Cal Lutheran. CMS plays No. 3 seed, La Verne at 5 p.m. on Thursday, Nov. 6 at Cal Lu's Gilbert Arena.
