CLAREMONT, Calif. – The Claremont-Mudd-Scripps women's water polo team had an impressive 17-win season in 2014 and finished second at the SCIAC Championships. With that, for the second-consecutive year, there were four Athenas named to the 2014 Association of Collegiate Water Polo Coaches (ACWPC) All-American Teams, the association announced.
For the third year in a row, senior center Candace Filippelli and senior attacker Alex Toohey were both selected as first team All-Americans. Both Candace Filippelli and Toohey closed out their careers at CMS as four-time All-Americans, with Candace Filippelli being named first team four times and Toohey being named to the first team three times and earning an honorable mention selection as a freshman in 2011. However, for the first time in Candace Filippelli's career, in 2014 she was chosen as Division III's Player of the Year. Junior goalie Allison Hu, who received an honorable mention selection last year, improved this year to receive a second team selection in 2014. Senior left attacker Alyssa Filippelli made the All-American Team for the first time as she received an honorable mention selection.
The ACWPC is comprised of college coaches from all over the country with a goal to promote the development and advancement of collegiate water polo. The members of the association vote to recognize players annually for their achievements in and out of the pool.
